A Celebration Of Woman In Leeds City Centre Bar

A new photography exhibition celebrating the concept of woman is on display at a Leeds city centre bar.

Bar Remedy is an independent Parisian-style jazz café bar on New Briggate. Since opening in 2017 it has always displayed artwork – mainly oil paintings by Leeds artist Nina Hunter – but this is the first time it has hosted a photography exhibition.

The exhibition, simply called ‘Woman’, was curated by Yorkshire-based company Lemon Tree Gallery; Geoff Powell and Anete Lusina are fine art photographers and tutors working all over the UK and Europe.

Anete Lusina is both photographer and model in Woman.

“Geoff and I wanted to create a powerful exhibition that explores and celebrates woman,” she explains. “It’s about being more one thing; more than being ‘just’ a body, not being pristine or perfect – whatever that might be – and ultimately not being defined.”

Geoff and Anete have worked together for four years and over that time have changed the way they work.

“My style of photographing the female is to portray the woman as she is, no posing instructions, no direction – I want her to feel comfortable by being herself; no make-up artists,” Geoff explains.

“Although I work in the digital world, my roots are in the traditional darkroom, so I replicate Lith printing along with wet plate styled photography – I like the raw imperfections the prints have. Lith prints impart soul and emotion and in this instance the emotions of the woman. Anete moves in a way that is comfortable for her and I capture it. And that encapsulates the very theme of Woman. Who am I to tell Anete, or anyone for that matter, how they should look?”

The images were all taken in the very bar that is exhibiting.

Owner Simon Hunter says, “Remedy is more than just a café bar; it’s a place to come and view and purchase quality art. I want people to come in have a drink, a bite to eat, relax, and start a conversation. That’s the very ethos of Bar Remedy.”

Woman runs until March 2019 and all images are framed and for sale at £75, visit for more information or Bar Remedy related info visit
